Assess
We inspect the existing surface, access, drainage and intended use.
Clear answers to common questions about chip & tar driveways, private roads, farm access, commercial surfacing, preparation, repairs and quotations.
Every site is different. These answers explain the fundamentals, but the right specification depends on the existing base, drainage, access, area and intended traffic. For project-specific advice, speak to our Wexford team.

Chip & tar, often called surface dressing, uses a sprayed bituminous binder followed by selected stone chippings that are rolled into the surface. It creates a practical, textured finish suited to many driveways, roads, lanes and larger access areas.
It can be an excellent option for suitable driveways, particularly longer approaches and larger areas where a natural stone appearance is wanted. The condition and construction of the existing base are important, so we assess the site before recommending a specification.
The final appearance is defined by the stone chipping used, giving a more natural and textured look than a smooth asphalt surface. The exact finish can vary with aggregate, site conditions and specification.
Yes. Good preparation is fundamental. Depending on the existing surface, work may include excavation, levelling, repairs, edge preparation, compaction or improving the underlying base before the chip & tar system is applied.
Sometimes. A sound, suitably prepared existing surface may be usable, while cracked, unstable or badly failed areas may require repairs or reconstruction first. We assess the surface before recommending the appropriate approach.
The typical sequence is site and base preparation, application of hot bituminous binder, spreading selected stone chippings, then rolling and finishing. The exact method depends on the site and intended traffic.
Timescales depend on area, access, preparation requirements and weather. Smaller straightforward projects may be completed relatively quickly, while larger roads, yards or sites needing substantial groundwork naturally take longer.
Service life varies according to base condition, installation, traffic, drainage, weather and maintenance. A properly prepared and correctly specified surface is intended to provide a durable wearing finish, but we avoid giving a universal lifespan without assessing the site.
Some loose chippings can be expected initially. This is normal with this type of surfacing and excess material can settle or be swept away as the surface beds in.
Yes, depending on the type and extent of damage. Localised defects may be repairable, while widespread deterioration or base failure can make broader resurfacing or reconstruction the better approach.
Yes. We can assess potholes, broken edges, worn areas and localised failures, then advise whether patch repair, preparation and resurfacing, or more extensive base work is appropriate.
We work throughout County Wexford, including Wexford Town, Gorey, Enniscorthy, New Ross, Rosslare, Bunclody and many surrounding towns, villages and rural locations.
Yes. We offer free, no-obligation quotations. For many projects a site assessment is the best way to understand the existing surface, access, dimensions and preparation required.
Yes. Alongside residential driveways, we undertake suitable private roads and lanes, farm access and yards, commercial surfacing, parking areas, repairs and resurfacing.
Your location, approximate dimensions, intended use and a short description of the existing surface are helpful. Photos can also provide useful initial context before a site visit is arranged.
It is commonly considered for larger driveways, rural approaches, private lanes, farm access, commercial areas and parking surfaces. The most important starting point is a stable base and a specification appropriate for how the area will be used.
